A case study showing how hypnotherapy can make a real difference to a person’s life.
For reasons of confidentiality, the name of this client has been changed.
I have found anxiety and stress to be the most common reason why clients seek help through hypnotherapy. The anxiety often concerns relationship issues and it can manifest itself in many different ways. This was the case for Robert. Struggling to cope with the breakdown of his marriage, Robert’s mood and motivation was at an all time low, he wasn’t sleeping well, he’d lost his appetite and he was experiencing daily panic attacks.
Robert’s best hopes from hypnotherapy were to manage the anxiety and moments of panic, to feel more in control and to cope better. He wanted to feel the desire to get up in the morning. He wanted to have more energy and enthusiasm to get on with things. He also wanted to come to an acceptance of his marriage break up.
In the first few sessions of hypnotherapy we focused on reducing Robert’s panic attacks and calming down the heightened stress response. Each hypnotherapy session included a combination of solution-focused talking therapy and hypnosis. The sessions were further supported by the use of a self-hypnosis relaxation track which Robert listened to at home at least once every day. By the third session Robert had noticed that his mood had improved, that he was now able to exercise more and his anxiety levels had dropped considerably.
In the following sessions we worked on building up inner strength and resolve along with extra coping mechanisms. By the fifth session Robert told me that he felt much calmer and more relaxed, he was not worrying so much and he was sleeping better. Further sessions focused on maintaining this calmness and dealing with difficult conversations regarding separation and divorce.
Robert had eight sessions of hypnotherapy in total, spread over two to three months. When asked about his experience of hypnotherapy, he said the sessions had made a massive difference. Despite having bouts of grief surrounding his separation and divorce, he was now accepting of the situation. He was also much more relaxed and happier. The anxiety was well under control and he was able to focus on other things and enjoy life again.
