Until relatively recently scientists maintained that the brain did not change after childhood, that our habitual thought patterns were hard-wired in our teens and pretty much fixed for life. Thanks to modern brain scanning techniques this idea has been completely turned on its head. We now have proof that the brain is a dynamic, highly sensitive and adaptable system which can be changed right up into old age, by a process known as neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity refers to our brains’ ability to change the way our brain cells (neurons) are wired together, our ability to forge new connections, essentially changing the way we think. What this means is that it is possible to change habitual thought patterns, long held beliefs and behaviours, no matter how long we have had held or been doing them. By carving new pathways in our brain we weaken the old connections. In essence, we can train our brain to create new habits of thought so that we can make positive changes in our life and be free to be the person we want to be. Who we are and what we are capable of is a product of the way our brain cells are interconnected.
As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist I help clients to tap into this natural ability of the brain, enabling a person to change unhelpful thinking habits (self-doubts, fears, worries, obsessive thoughts and so forth). With repeated and directed attention towards your desired change, you can rewire your brain.
This excellent short video on Inside the Brain shows how we can all change the way we think.
