7 Signs You could Benefit from Hypnotherapy

There are many different reasons people seek help through hypnotherapy, but I have found some common themes come up when asking clients what prompted them to get in touch.

Here are 7 things I often hear clients say…

I get stressed over little things that I used to be able to cope with.

I find it hard to focus on tasks and get things done.

I worry all the time about the smallest things and often find myself catastrophising.

My mind is constantly busy and I find it difficult to relax.

I feel irritable with my family and friends for no good reason.

I keep over thinking things that have happened in the past.

I lack the motivation and enthusiasm to do the things I used to enjoy.

These are all tell-tale signs of low mood or anxiety and these kinds of issues come up all the time in the therapy room.

During the initial consultation I explain how the brain works and how it’s wired to protect us with these unhelpful responses to perceived threats. Once clients understand the workings of the brain they’re often able to identify a chain of events or a change in circumstances that might have led to them feeling anxious or down. And it comes as a welcome relief to realise that they’re not alone in experiencing these symptoms.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Clinical hypnotherapy is a combination of talking therapy and hypnosis, hypnosis being an extremely pleasant state of relaxation. In the talking part of the session I use solution-focused questioning techniques to help clients identify their way forward, a way out of the low mood or anxious state they’re experiencing, towards their preferred future.

It’s not always obvious what the underlying cause of the issue is, but in the Solution Focused world this isn’t a problem. What’s important is that once you know how the brain works you can move forward positively, away from the problem and towards a solution. During hypnosis the relaxing trance state helps to enhance that positive, solution-seeking train of thought. Brain waves change during this process, allowing you to see solutions to problems more easily.

Because Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is generally a ‘brief’ intervention, clients often achieve positive change pretty quickly. After just a few sessions many clients are commenting that they feel lighter, more relaxed and happier. A few weeks or a couple of months can be all it takes to equip a person with the tools to deal with whatever life throws at them.
